1. You’ll need a marketing plan. Create a marketing plan for the event. The more organised you are, the more professional your event will be.
2. Be tireless in your efforts or your event will fail. If you don’t want to be the only person at your event then you’ll have to shout from the rooftops about your event. Remember people are looking for events to attend and they won’t stumble upon your event unless you tell them about it.
3. Why should people attend your event? What’s the draw for attendees? You need to define what you’re doing at the event that will bring your target attendees in the door. Is there a fantastic band playing that will attract guests? Will there be a speech by someone respected by your guests?
4. Don’t assume people know what is happening at your event. Make sure you have a lot of information about the event and let potential guests know exactly what will be happening.
5. Learn how to talk to the media. Journalists are always looking for good stories. Is there something special about your event? Send the local media a well-written press release. You never know they may run a story about the event and maybe even want to interview you beforehand.
6. Buy advertising on social media networks. Whilst this may seem like an expensive way to advertise your event, you can define your audience down to a very small niche. This means you are targeting the right people and not wasting money on advertising to the wrong audience in the hope your audience may see it.
7. Create a low-budget promotional video. Social media platforms (especially Facebook) loves video. Create a short video on your phone about the event. It could even be a quick interview with the speakers or a video taking your audience for a tour around the venue. Create suspense and make the audience want to be there.
8. Use online registration. The easiest way to scare people away is by having analogue registration (i.e. having to phone someone to take a payment). Offer online registration to secure as many attendees as soon as possible. This will help to forecast numbers and release budget sooner.
9. Offer local businesses incentives to promote you. Give free tickets to local businesses such as cafes, hairdressers and restaurants. Think about where your target audience will go to and ask these businesses if they’d like to partner with you.
10. Give early bird incentives. Early bird tickets at a cheaper rate are a great way to get early sign-ups by giving people an incentive to act now rather than wait and forget.
